Geographical location and regions

Hungary is situated in Central Europe, in the Carpathian Basin, a low-land country, cut across by rivers.

The two most important rivers are the Danube and the Tisza.

The territory of Hungary can be divided into six large areas according to the most important natural features: the Great Plain, the Little Plain, the Northern Mountain-range, the Transdanubian Mountain-range, the Transdanubian Hills and the Western-Hungarian border, part of the Eastern Alps. The highest geographical point of the country is Kékes (1014 m) in the Mátra Mountains, in the Northern Mountain-range.

Climate

Three climatic zones influence the climate of Hungary: the continental, the oceanic and the Mediterranean, so the continental climate is relatively moderate.

The warmest month is July (21.3ºC), the coldest one is January (-1ºC).

In Budapest

Budapest has an excellent network of public transport. Buses, trolley buses, trams, 3 metro lines (all connected at Deák tér) and 3 overland HÉV trains are in service generally from 4.30 to 23.00.

You can use the same type of ticket for all forms of public transport in the city, but you must validate a new ticket when you change lines.

Cogwheel-Railway (Fogaskerekű vasút): Városmajor – Széchenyi Hill

It was built in 1873, introduced into Hungary 5 years after the first cogwheel appeared in the US. It leaves from Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor and climbs the Buda Hills.

Children’s Railway (Gyermekvasút): Széchenyi Hill – Hűvösvölgy

It is run by children aged 10-14 years, through the Buda forest from Hüvösvölgy to Széchenyi Hegy.

World Heritage

BudapestThe two banks of the Danube from Margaret Island to Gellért Hill and the Buda Castle Qqarter was put on the list in 1987. The palace complex is still the most important cultural and historical centre of Budapest. Here can be found the Hungarian National Gallery, the National Széchenyi Library, the Budapest History Museum and the Ludwig Museum.

The Andrássy út and its historical environment in 2002 became the part of the World Heritage. Some of the outstanding buildings are the Opera House, the Ballet Institute, and the Music Academy. Under the street there is the Millenium Underground Railway, which was the first on the continent. Andrássy út leads to Heroes’ Square. The statues of outstanding Hungarian rulers and leaders stand in the semicircular colonnade. On the two sides of the square there are the Museum of Fine Arts and the Art Gallery.

Pannonhalma The Pannonhalma Abbey stands on the Szent Márton Hill. The Benedictines founded the first monastic school here. The building was built three times: in the course of the 11th century the first church and monastery were built, the current church and crypt were only completed in the 13th century.

Pécs – The city was founded by the Romans in the 2nd century. The early Christian pile is a unique sight of the town and the country as well. The early Christian mausoleum from the 4th century, the Romanesque Cathedral founded by King Saint Stephen and the crypt from the 11th century became the part of the World Heritage in 2000.

Hollókő – This is the first village in the world to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The buildings of the small Palóc village preserved the traditional structure. The protected territory covers 55 historic buildings and a 141 hectare protected area, was put on the list in 1987.

Hortobágy – It is one of Europe’s largest protected grasslands. The „puszta” is a favourite tourist destination, where the characteristic animals (the Hungarian grey cattle, the twisted horn Racka sheep, the typical sheep-dog „puli” and buffalo herds) and the ethnographic traditions can be seen. The past and present of the national park, the wildlife and the folklore are presented by visitors’ centers.

Aggtelek – The calcium carbonate cave group is one of the most significant areas from a geological, zoological, palaeontological and archeological point of view. …the 25 km long Baradla cave system, which is the longest in the region, adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. The caves are at the Hungarian-Slovak border, the two countries jointly requested them to be added to the World Heritage List.

Lake Fertő – It became the part of the World Heritage in 2001, on the basis of the common proposal initiated by Hungary and Austria. The salt natron lake, lined with extended fields is the 3rd biggest lake in Eastern Europe. The thousand hectares of reed fields and the free water surface give shelter to a lot of protected birds. The Fertő-Hanság National Park protects the valuable living areas, the plants.

The only holiday resort on the Hungarian coast is close to Fertőrákos. Good conditions for sailing and surfing are guaranteed. The channels are popular places for line fishing.

Tokaj-Hegyalja – A historical wine region, put on the list in 2002. The Tokaji Aszú, a world- famous wine, is made of grapes with concentrated sugar content. It was used as a medicine in the Middle Ages. „King of Wines, Wine of Kings”.
